Shaun Johnson was born in Auckland in 1944 and has been visually impaired since childhood. He became a boarder at the New Zealand Institute for the Blind in 1950 where he stayed for 11 years. He started playing piano at age seven. After finishing university he played semi-professionally. He began his full time career as a resident pianist in 1967 at the Wairakei hotel resort at Taupo (he resort is halfway between Wellington and Auckland) where he would stay until 1980.

In 1980 he became the resident pianist (six nights a week) at the James Cook Hotel in Wellington and was still playing there till at least 2019

Johnson is also the Wellington chairman of the Association of Blind Citizens NZ and has been recognised by the Wellington Jazz Club for his outstanding contribution to live music in Wellington.
