Elend's work can best be described as very dark and oppressing symphonic music influenced by Krzysztof Penderecki, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Henry and Peter Eötvös. Their method of structuring pieces of music does not follow any dogmatic rules and their use of arrangements reaches peaks in terms of orchestral density and vocal diversity. They have kept the traditional instrumentation of post-romantic orchestras but taken the limits much further by multiplying the number of instruments in each section and extending it by integrating modern elements such as ambient and industrial sounds and percussion instruments.
Their compositions are structured into two trilogies: and .

Formed in September 1993:
Aeon was Iskandar Hasnawi's atmospheric dark metal band (1992-1993) which evolved into a one-man dark orchestral band before merging into Elend when Renaud Tschirner joined in September 1993.

Founded in 1993 by composers and multi-instrumentalists Iskandar Hasnawi and Renaud Tschirner, joined by keyboard player, programmer and engineer Sébastien Roland in 1997, Elend have released two trilogies of albums so far, the "Officium Tenebrarum" (1994-1998) and the "Winds Cycle" (2003-2007). After a hiatus of 13 years, Elend resumed their work in 2019.
