Cardinali was born in 1930 (Died 1997) in Italy during the political turmoil under Mussolini. His childhood was like something out from Dickens' novels. As a boy, he was homeless and hungry. Even as a child, he knew that he had a good voice which was the gift from God. He had to start earning a living from his singing on the street as a young boy in order to survive. He would implore by saying: "If you give me some chocolate, I'll sing for you". "His rendition of Ave Maria brought him twelve bars of chocolate and eight biscuits."
