The Mulemena Boys

Members: Brian Bruno Chibangu, Gift Simon Chisha, Joseph Mutemba, Fred Bwalya

Zambian folk and kalindula band.

A Zambian folk band named in honor of the late Emmanuel Mulemena, the Mulemena Boys was founded in the wake of their namesake's death in 1982 by members of his backing band, then known as "The Sound Inspectors. The group released its first album, The Mulemena Boys - A Tribute To The Late Emmanuel Mulemena, (dedicated to their former bandleader) in 1984, performing in a style similar to the folk music that Mulemena had popularized in the 1970s. A second album, The Mulemena Boys - Special Dedication To The Fallen Heroes, with some new members following the death of Brian Bruno Chibangu was released in 1986. Their later sound was based on the kalindula style popular in the 1980s, and on rumba imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Mulemena Boys were active throughout the 80's and into the 90's, first under the name "The Mulemena Boys" and later as "The Junior Mulemena Boys". Surviving members reformed the band briefly in 2015 to record a new album under their original name, The Mulemena Boys - Pakyalo.
