She chose the stage name "Kayna Samet", paying tribute to Kahina, the legendary female Berber commander. The debut album displayed her heart-wrenching raw vocals (compared by critics to Mary J. Blige), as well as introspective lyrics about harsh reality of second-generation immigrant youth facing tough circumstances of inner city living.
