Brent was attracted very early by music, he began singing and learned to play guitar and bass. He played in various high school orchestras. An offer came in 1951 as local musician Freddie Bell was putting a band together. Thus Freddie Bell & The Bellboys came into existence. The group's first recording session was done for Bernie Lowe's Teen Label in 1955.
