Sheer Energy regularly performed at Hunter's restaurant and lounge in St. Louis, Missouri. Hunter's attracted a largely black, well-dressed audience and was situated in the rear of a small shopping center off Parker Road.

Members of Sheer Energy included Wilma Johnson, vocalist; Andre Sheppard, vocalist; Leon Perry, lead guitarist and vocalist; A.J. Boyd and Terry Bradford, keyboard players; Anthony Bankhead, drummer; and Rev. Elmer Rice, bass guitarist and vocalist. Rice's wife, Willie Jean Rice was the band's manager. A majority of their booking were at military bases and private clubs.
