Academy Award winner Greek stage and film actress. Born 17 December 1900 in Piraeus, Greece, died 22 February 1973 in Athens, Greece.In 1932, she was among the actors who inaugurated the recently re-founded Εθνικό Θέατρο, where she worked until 1940. Paxinou made several appearances on the Broadway stage and television as well. She was the first Greek to win the Academy Award and receiving an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1944 for the film "For Whom The Bell Tolls".
She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1951.
She married Αλέξης Μινωτής in 1940 (her second marriage) and was grandmother of Αλέξανδρος Αντωνόπουλος.
