Masha i Medvedi (Маша и Медведи) is a Russian rock-band founded in 1997 by singer-songwriter Masha Makarova. The group had been active in 1997–2000 and again since 2004, playing and recording indie/alt-rock with elements of folk and psychedelia. When Oleg Nesterov was touring in Krasnodar with his band Megapolis in 1996, Masha Makarova gave him a demo-tape. The producer signed a contract with a singer. In 1997, she formed Masha i Medvedi band and relocated to Moscow. Makarova wrote all music and lyrics on their debut album, released in 1998 by Extraphone. The group had a huge success, started touring extensively and received various awards from magazines and popular FM-stations. In 1999, Masha i Medvedi recorded their second album.
At the peak of success, the group came to an end abruptly in 2000. Right before the major gig at the Maxidrom Festival, Makarova had a fight with other band members – they cancelled the show that night and decided to split. Four years later, the group reunited and recorded the third album. Erik Chanturia is a new producer of the band.
