Army Quartet "Star"
Members: Uldis Stabulnieks, Gunārs Rozenbergs
Original name in Latvian: Zvaigznite. Band formed in 1963, in Riga.Band leader is Gunars Rozenbergs, one of most famous Latvian jazz musician, composer, arranger and trumpet player, a legend of Latvian jazz. He performed at the jazz festival in Tallinn with army jazz band "Zvaigznite" - because at the moment he served at the army (the service was a mandatory in USSR). The band "Zvaigznite" was official staff in army, originally organised for playing dances at the army events, and very many famous Latvian muscians actually served there. At the festival they played free-jazz(!) and post-bop programm. At the moment in band played also later very famous Latvian jazz pianist and composer Uldis Stabulnieks. At the end of festival Gunars received Award from jazz federation for his performance.
The ensemble recorded songs for the Latvian film "Breathe Deeply" ("Četri balti krekli", 1967), but in the film the name of the ensemble was "Optimisti".
