Biography
Pretty Quick
Pretty Quick were a Brooklyn and Manhattan based Rock and Roll group featuring members Daniel Richard Rozell, Blake Burkeholder, Dave Ready, Josh Martin, Tony Mann. Currently the group is inactive, although Josh and Daniel continue to write songs and remain close friends. The name "Pretty Quick" was chosen by co-founding guitarist Josh Martin, in homage to 60s Garage Rock band "The Chob" and their classic and much loved anthem "We're Pretty Quick". The band came about as the result of a recording session with Daniel. Daniel had been looking for a guitarist to perform some high octane cover versions of early American rock n roll standards with Tony Mann (ex GG Allin and the Jabbers drummer) playing drums and co-producing with White Zombie and Psychotica co-founder and ex-Posh Boy records manager Paul "Ena" Kostabi. Paul had shown interest in Daniel on the recommendation of Tony who was interested in Daniel's singing as they'd met several years prior at a UFO concert in Times Square. Tony and Dan had bonded over a shared and mutual love for the New York Dolls. Dan had asked Josh Martin initially if he'd like to record a cover version of Texas rockabilly star Johnny Preston's classic "Feel So Fine" with the drummer (Tony) who'd played and performed on many of GG Allin's classic songs, including "Live Fast Die Fast". Josh and Daniel had been living together for several months in Brooklyn at the infamous and now legendary Williamsburg loft simply nicknamed "The Ranch". When Daniel presented the idea of the project to Josh, Josh couldn't resist. Being a lifelong fan of GG Allin, Josh was eager to play and meet Tony. Daniel had been inspired by an album he remembered hearing while in Germany on the autobahn as roadie for the classic NWOBHM band RAVEN The album was a cover album by Rose Tattoo singer and guitarist Angry Anderson and Peter Wells "Damn Fine Band" in which they injected high speed laced Australian badass energy into American rock n roll standards. Hearing the classic 50s standards in this style had inspired Daniel to form a band that could play at this pace and velocity. Watching the ancient Frankfurt countryside passing by at 160 Kilometers an hour sitting with Mark Gallagher (guitarist of Raven) and having the entire line-up of Virgin Steele at his back, The energy behind Angry Anderson and Peter Wells really got to Daniel and he decided that he'd dedicate his life to Rock and Roll right then and there. The idea appealed to Daniel for many years and now in New York he had the players to make a similar band of his own. The band recorded "Feel So Fine" and a song called "Chicodee Honey", that bassist Dave Ready had helped Daniel write one evening on the roof of "The Ranch". Daniel and Josh decided to bring Dave in on the project and to finish the song that Daniel and Dave had started. Josh sat them down and helped rework the song properly and gave it a better attitude and seal of approval. Josh's experience on the road and in bands as lead singer and lead guitarist of Atlanta based iconic bands like The Carbonas and Beat Beat Beat was exactly what Daniel had been looking for. Daniel's experience playing in Boston based garage band The Aboriginees and a brief stint fronting the dutch heavy rock band Dzjenghis Khan had left Daniel with a drive to prove himself even more. He would get the chance a week after the recording session when he was approached by none other than rock photographer and ex David Bowie Mott the Hoople, and Johnny Thunders manager and Andy Warhol right hand man, Leee Black Childers. Leee found Daniel in Mars bar and on a whim asked him if his band would play his 65th birthday party. Leee had never met Daniel and only assumed Daniel was a singer. Leee told Daniel that he would be performing at the Delancey the following friday and that he needed answer. Leee booked Daniel's new band as The Shrimpton's as Leee would tell Daniel that all his favorite boys looked like the classic hollywood film starlets. Apparently Leee thought Daniel was the image of young Jean Shrimpton. Pretty Quick would perform its first show at the Delancey the following weekend. The show would prove the band could really play and come together live. The band would receive much adoration and applause. The crowd in attendance included a close friend of the band and drummer who offered his service to play. The timing was perfect and Josh and Daniel met with their friend to discuss the new band and lineup. Sadly the inexperience and loyalty of Daniel to drummer Tony led to the new lineup approach being scratched. This would prove to be a mistake in hindsight as it would turn out Tony had only intended to help form the band. This lineup would play many shows that year and the next, but due to the shaky lineup caused by Tony's commitments to other projects and other members commitments to other groups Daniel would be forced to make a choice to cross his fingers and hope the band would push through. Sadly the first real sign of the end was when Rhythm Guitarist Blake Burkeholder would eventually have to opt out of playing in the band due to his rigorous schedule as a celebrated celebrity hair stylist. With a career to match the stars themselves, Blake's playing and personality were missed and his amazing energy and riffs for songs like Mr. Mint Condition were magic. The band would break up due to unfortunate circumstances involving a whole lot of too much too soon too young and too dumb etc etc etc. No management and a penchant for substances, the band failed hard before anything really beneficial happened for them. In their short time they had been offered several record deals, none of which led to anything other than an occasional argument and hiatus. The legend lives however as Josh and Daniel remain close friend. They continue to write songs together and plans to rerecord and finish a studio album by 2023 have revamped the magic between these two friends and songwriters. Daniel's love for Pretty Quick and the songs he'd written and time he'd spent with the band were never matched by another group, he would perform on occasion doing standards or tribute bands at Halloween concerts in Brooklyn. He kept his love for music alive by tour managing Daddy Long Legs (North America) and The Dickies (mid west and east coast) and driving for his friend and mentor Sonny Vincent. He co-organized a 40th anniversary celebration of The Dead Boys featuring Cheetah Chrome Johnny Blitz and guest singer Bobby Liebling introducing Bobby to his heroes (cheetah and blitz) and working out a festival headline appearance at SXSW. Daniel's early interest in Rock n Roll began with a disillusionment with the increasingly and seemingly randomly now violent Boston Hardcore scene (Dan's love for classic boston Hardcore remains forever) and decided to spend his time hanging around older rock groups that he began to idolize in his later teen years. He lucked out when he met Joe Hasselvander (drummer for Pentagram and Raven) and his journey as Roadie and friend really kicked off. Joe would take the young Daniel under his wing and his first real rock n roll gigs were aiding Raven and Blue Cheer on the road, and he learned quite a bit from folks like Dickie Peterson and Joe Hasselvander, and through those connections, Daniel would pursue his own dreams. By 21 he'd been fronting a Garage band that he'd named "The Aboriginees" after Detroit's Stooges/MC5 little brother band "The UP". The Aboriginees were a band started by the Knight Brothers of 90s Boston rock group
"Runner and the Thermodynamics." The Aboriginees were short lived, but the experience gave Daniel the confidence to sing and front a band. Daniel is currently working on his degree in writing in at Framingham University in Massachusetts and lives on Cape Cod with his girlfriend. Josh Martin lives in Atlanta and appears with the Carbonas for reunion shows at festivals and performances around the world. Dave Ready is a proud father and still kicks ass and is a celebrated best friend trophy award recipient, Blake Burkeholder is still a Hair Stylist for some of the biggest names in Hollywood and Fashion Today, and Tony Mann is still working and living in Manhattan and is an integral part of the heartbeat of the music he loves, as an author and filmmaker and expert in his field; he is a co-founder of the Marc Bolan School of Music in Sierra Leone along with legend Gloria Jones and Rolan Bolan(Marc's song).
