Avantgarde black metal band Sigh were formed in 1989 in Japan by Mirai (voice, bass, keyboard), Satoshi (guitar) and Kazuki (drums). Inspired by Venom and other '80s thrash bands, Sigh soon adopted the European approach of black metal. Gaining the interest of Norwegian mastermind Euronymous, they signed with the guitarists' Deathlike Silence Productions, but their debut for the label wasn't released until after Euronymous' death in 1993.

The full-length "Scorn Defeat", which featured Sigh's new guitarist Shinichi (and Satoshi behind the drum kit), gained international underground respect and allowed the band to progress and continue recording intelligent releases. Their unique noises and compositions insanity helped the band become popular in the underground and beyond, reaching greater success with later albums, namely "Hail Horror Hail", "Scenario IV: Dread Dreams" and "Imaginary Sonicscape".
