José Gamboa Ceballos, who was born in 1920 in the city of Mérida, Yucatán. He studied typing, but one day he decided that his agility and speed in the typewriter would be better used in front of a piano. He studied percussion and piano at the Conservatorio de Música de Mérida. He was self-taught in composition and orchestra direction.
During his youth he was part of various bands, song groups and dance orchestras. Around 1940 he moved to Mexico City and there he dedicated himself to making arrangements and directing dance ensembles.
