Hayes was best known for his numerous appearances in Western movies as the colorful sidekick to the leading man. His catchphrases were "yer durn tootin" and "young whipper snapper". He was a good actor as in real life he was the exact opposite of the characters he played on film; he was well-read, well-groomed, serious and highly philosophical.
