Kenton had decided he wanted to make a vocal album when his secretary Margaret Sharpe, who was a member of the famous Roger Wagner Chorale, knew that four men from the choir had been rehearsing after-hours as a Four Freshmen-styled pop quartet termed the Modern Men, and suggested them to Kenton. Kenton was impressed by them and believed he could groom them into a creative force within the orchestra.
Plans for the group to tour with the band were dropped when Kenton with Voices did not sell well.
