Backwater were a Birmingham, AL-based jazz group initially consisting of Larry Hardin, Robby Catlin, Trippe Thomason and Scott Pettersen. The quartet's 1976 self-titled debut record led the band to perform throughout the South. Backwater released one more album (1978's Live from the Heart of Dixie/North of the Mason Dixon Line) with a slightly different lineup (consisting of Catlin, Pettersen and Tom and Myra Woodruff) before splitting as the decade closed.
