Progressive symphonic metal project from Munich, Germany, founded in 1994 by guitarist Markus Glanz (ex Brainstorm, ex Vain Vision) and drummer Stefan Petzoldt (ex Dreamscape (11)). In 1995 keyboarder and pianist Wolfgang Schneider (6) and in 1996 bassist Michael Scherz joined the project.

The name of the band „Koyaanisqatsy“ comes from the language of the Hopi-Indians and means as much as „Crazy Life“, “Riot life”, „Out Of Balance“, “A state that has to be changed”. It is also the title of a popular cult documentary film (spelled Koyaanisqatsi).

The band remained unsuccessful in search of a singer, so the debut CD "From The Yearning To Burst The Perpetual Circle" was realized as a pure instrumental album in 2000. It remained unreleased until 2007.

In December 2000 an unexpected incident occurred, so the band broke up exactly on January 1st, 2001.

In 2003, bassist Michael Scherz passed away.

In March 2005, Koyaanisqatsy reunited as a pure studio project featuring Markus Glanz and Wolfgang Schneider.
