Name used by two distinct groups led by pianist Keith Jarrett. The original trio was formed in 1967 with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums. The group recorded Jarrett's first album as leader, Life Between The Exit Signs, followed by the live album Somewhere Before (only this album was to be released using the group name). In 1971 the group recorded three albums for Atlantic during one four-day session: The Mourning Of A Star, El Juicio (The Judgement) and Birth. On the latter two, the trio was augmented by saxophonist Dewey Redman who subsequently joined the group which became known as the "American Quartet".

A second trio was formed in 1983 when, at the instigation of Manfred Eicher, Jarrett asked bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette to record an album of jazz standards released as Standards, Vol. 1. The formula proved to be a success and soon after the group recorded another album of standards (Standards, Vol. 2) and one with originals (Changes) during one session. The so-called "Standards Trio" went on to record numerous live and studio albums, some released under the group name, others only billing the artists' individual names. The trio eventually disbanded in 2014.
