Artist Biography by Bruce Eder

"Tony" of Tony and the Shantels was actually lead singer Ernie Roach--the rest of the band was Ian Ferguson (bass), Kevin Runciman (rhythm guitar), Tony Colmer (lead guitar), Keith Harris (sax), and Laurie Brown (drums). Formed in the large farm town of Shepparton, Australia, they were originally called the Shantells until Roach decided a longer name was in order. They recorded for the Astor label, and managed to issue a garage rock classic called "On My Mind," during 1965, which charted locally but failed to sell well in Melbourne or other large cities. The group split up later in 1965.
