Essie was was a member of the Church of God In Christ and was already an established singer in the Detroit area before she joined The Celestials, eventually marrying the founder of the group Bill Moss. She also recorded for her husband's Bilesse label, as well as Jewel Records and Atlanta International Records. She is also the mother of gospel artists J. Moss and Bill Moss Jr..
