Dioxins have been considered highly toxic and able to cause reproductive and developmental problems. In line with animal studies, developmental effects may be much more important than effects in adults. These include disturbances of tooth development, and of sexual development.

Kymi-river has one of the worlds most heavily polluted riverbeds. It is exceptionally rich in organochlorines such as dioxins and mercury. It is estimated that the riverbed has more dioxins than the whole of Gulf of Finland.

The most heavily polluted part is between Keltti and Kuusankoski.

Chlorine compunds were mainly formed in Kuusankoski as a by-product of manufacturing the wood preservative Ky5 at the Kymi-companys paper mills.

Dioxine Waves grew up in Kuusankoski within a stones throw from the river. The music flows from the flux.
