Suomi Jazz Orkesteri
Suomi Jazz Orkesteri was founded in 1927 by the Estonian-born Konno brothers, Robert and Hannes, on the basis of Konno's Jazz Orchestra, which was influential in Porvoo, Finland. Both brothers were former military musicians, and played in different bands as a sideline. The orchestra started as a five-piece; fiddle, saxophone, accordion, banjo and drums. The orchestra did not have its own vocal soloist, but at restaurant gigs, if necessary, one of the players sang the chorus of the song into the megaphone.
The orchestra made its first recordings in the summer of 1928. From the recordings, the foxy "PuuseppƤ" became the first successful record in Finnish recording history. Jaakko Pulli from Lahti sings on the album. The simultaneous recordings "Kohtalonwalssi" and "Anna, oi Armas Anna" were also sales successes.
In May 1929, the orchestra recorded for the next time, and the biggest hit of these sessions was "Asfalttikukka", the singer of which was Ture Ara, under the pseudonym Topi Aaltonen. The orchestra's last own records were made a year later. At that time, the line-up already had eight members, and one of the three accordionists was Vili Vesterinen, before moving to DallapƩ. Hannes Konto later became a successful hit composer. His most famous works are the waltz "Roses in a silver cup".
