German singer-songwriter, poet and dissident (°Hamburg, 15 November 1936). In 1953 he migrated to the GDR in the hope of living out his communist ideals, but his non-conformism eventually led to his blacklisting by the authorities. In 1976 his citizenship was revoked while performing in Cologne, after which he settled in Hamburg. He is one of the best-selling German poet from the post-war era and received numerous awards for his works.
