Alan Civil

British horn player, composer, arranger, and educator. Born 13 June 1929, Northampton, East Midlands, England, UK - Died 19 March 1989, London, England, UK.He joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1953 becoming principal hornist in 1954. In 1955, he joined the Philharmonia Orchestra becoming principal hornist in 1957. When Walter Legge suspended the orchestra in 1964, Civil became one of the first members of the governing body and stayed with the New Philharmonia Orchestra until 1966, when he became first horn with the BBC Symphony Orchestra until his retirement in 1988. In 1966, he became professor at the Royal College of Music, London. He played a horn solo on the track "For No One" included on The Beatles - Revolver album.
He was married to Shirley Hopkins and was appointed OBE in 1985.
