George Power

Real name: Akis Eracleous

Born 26/12/1951 - died 18/10/2018

Resident DJ at Crackers of 1975-76 to 1981. He was principal founder of Kiss FM London on 94.0 FM (October 1982 – 1985). Kiss FM made its first broadcast at 9:30am on the 7th October 1985.

Of Greek Cypriot origin he realized he could concentrate on building a radio station for his Greek community in England, and in 1983 he co-founded London Greek Radio (LGR 103.3FM).
Once LGR had taken off George Power had the idea of re-branding Crackers, it was his dream to take this idea further. The idea of a soul music show on 103.3fm that Crackers was reborn. George Power created the Soul Crackers show that first went live on 103.3fm on July 23rd 2012.
He also founded Sunshine Radio on the Cote D'Azur (South of France) (1985 – 1987).

Co-founded Boogie Beat Records in 1990.

In 1991 he had a project in mind which was to open a record store in London, it took him two years to realize this project. And in 1993 Nice 'N' Ripe Records was born. (1991 - 1997)

In 2013 he created crackersradio.com, a radio station that is focused on delivering good quality soulful music across the board, ranging from Soulful RnB, Neo Soul, Conscious soulful Hip-hop, Soulful house, and of course those specialist shows like Soul Crackers focusing on the 70s and 80s Soul Funk and jazzy sounds synonymous with the crackers brand.

George is an inspirational figure for many of the countries top DJs, from the likes of Norman Jay (M.B.E.) and Paul "Trouble" Anderson through to Trevor Nelson (M.B.E.) and Gilles Peterson.

In 1973 George realised that his real love was with music and began working as a Disc Jockey in well-known clubs in and around London – he soon became established as a leading DJ. He was approached by one of the first unlicensed soul stations, Invicta Radio, in 1978 and accepted their offer of air time on a regular basis which resulted in his nomination as a top radio presenter.

George ran a number of hugely successful promotions in the late seventies and early eighties, with himself as the headline DJ, doing soul-all-dayers and all-nighters. He brought many Pas to his clubs such as Tom Browne, Anita Ward, Mantronix, Jermaine Jackson, Level 42, Freeez, McFadden & Whitehead, Light Of The World, Odyssey, Hi-Tension, Mirage, Eddy Grant, The Breakfast Band, UK Players, Central Line and Five Star.

Making a name for himself at the legendary Crackers on Friday afternoons and Sunday nights, George had a massive following from the regular “soul-boys” to the trendy celebrities, even Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) was spotted in the club. His Roller Disco’s at the Electric Ballroom on Wednesday nights with Paul "Trouble" Anderson and his Double Disco on Friday nights with Gilles Peterson were a huge success in the mid eighties.

With his successes on radio and in the night clubs, he was inspired to set up his own radio station. He was the original founder of Kiss FM, an unauthorised radio station which, soon after its launch in the early eighties, established itself as London’s most listened-to unlicensed radio station.

Being of Greek Cypriot origin and seeing the success of Kiss FM, as well as being aware of the needs of his compatriots in England, he concentrated on the formation of a station for the Greek community. In October 1983, George co-founded London Greek Radio. The station operated without a license, but with tremendous success, right up to 31 December 1988.

While London Greek Radio came off air, pending an application for a legal license, in 1985 George founded and established Sunshine Radio, on the Cote D'Azur. Sunshine was the only English-speaking radio station based in the South of France; an immediate success.

George later returned to London where he launched his own record promotions company in the early nineties and currently owns a well established and highly successful independent record label, Nice ‘N’ Ripe Records, which he founded in 1993.

Now back by popular demand, George Power is re-launching the Crackers brand. Today he broadcasts the Soul Crackers show on 103.3fm every Monday night 9pm-12 midnight.

When Norman Jay refers to you as his biggest influence, you know you are a big dog in the game. In fact, in some knowledgeable circles, George Power is deemed more important than even Chris Hill or Robbie Vincent! To many, here's remembered alongside Paul "Trouble" Anderson as a pioneer of London's electro scene in the 80s, but he was also a very influential figure to many a soul-boy at a club called Crackers in the West End, and was an original founder of Kiss FM and London Greek Radio. Often under-appreciated and under-rated, George Power deserves major props for influencing so many of the original DJs on the black music scene to actually pick up a pair of headphones in the first place.
