American Jazz repertoire formed in Michigan.
The New Reformation Band (NRB) encompasses Dixieland, ragtime, blues, big band, and swing music. NRB was formed in 1970 during a cold Michigan winter. The First Congregational Church’s youth minister, Reverend Gary Miller, asked Dave Oppermann, a local business person by day, and a sing-along piano player by night, if he would help organize a group for a single performance…a Dixieland worship service. Seven musicians gathered in the sanctuary of the church in a shocking yet highly successful attempt to bring jazz into the service. Most had played “jazz” before, just not in church, and not with each other. With the exception of the Brothers Oppermann — on piano and banjo — most were shaking hands for the first time.
Since then, they've cranked out 16 CDs/albums exploring traditional influences. The group has had over 200 members in its 50+ year history.
