The System were a band from the Edina/Hopkins, MN area. They were active from 1967 to 1973, and went through various lineup changes.
In 1967, they recorded at Dove Recording Studio in Bloomington “I Just Don’t Know” and “He’s In Love With Himself”. A few acetates were cut and were never released.
In June 1969, the band recorded two original songs for a 45 at Universal Audio in Minneapolis. One member brought in Jim Golden from Chicago in to produce the record (he had produced several The Cryan' Shames singles on Columbia. Bob Shultz was the recording engineer. The band took a week off from playing when the 45 was pressed, in order to drive around to various locations in order to promote the 45. The record got airplay in Willmar and St Cloud and went to number ten in Duluth and the Iron Range. In Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, the record went to number one. The record was also played in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fargo, North Dakota.
In late Summer 1969, the band went into Sound 80 in Edina and recorded an original song written by Mike Holm called “Smiling Eyes.” The song was released in late 1970 on "The Gathering at the Depot" album, a promo album for various bands booked by Alpha Productions. Applause was added to the song to make it sound like a live recording.
The band came to an end in May 1973.
