Please use only for credits explicitly omitting James Brown (e.g. "backing band" credits; post-1968 group-only releases). Otherwise please use James Brown & The Famous Flames.

Prior to their first release ("Please, Please, Please") the group was billed first as "The Flames", then as the "The Famous Flames" with James Brown being billed as a group member. With their first release they changed their name to "James Brown & The Famous Flames". From then on "The Famous Flames" were the vocal accompaniment of James Brown, thus being a part of "James Brown & The Famous Flames".

In 1968 "The Famous Flames" split from James Brown and - with a completely new line-up that was formerly recording as The Solars - became a stand-alone group that released some singles from 1970 to 1975.
