American dance orchestra recording mostly for Victor between 1931-1934.
Ted Black formed his first band in 1929. The band's theme songs were "Pagan Moon" and "On the Beach with You". The band was noted for having top-rated arrangements on the commercial side. The band played on Broadway, including appearing in the musical Ballyhoo in 1931. "Love Letters in the Sand" (#6, 1931) brought great interest in the band, with Black singing vocals. They also had a regular NBC radio feature.
“The Prince of Wales’ favorite band” was the title given Ted Black and his orchestra after they toured Europe in 1933. They had hits with "In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town" (Chick Bullock vocals) and "Masquerade" (Dick Robertson vocals), #2 and #3 respectively in 1932.
The orchesta also released some titles on Brunswick-associated labels such as Melotone and Panachord.
