The group was formed by the brothers Plura and Carla Jonsson and their friend Tony Thorén. Their first album, Elisabet, came out in 1974 under the original group name Piska Mig Hårt. The name was changed to Eldkvarn in 1976. The band has been based in Stockholm for a long time. Carla, Plura and Tony are still in the group but the other members have changed. However, the band's current line-up has stood the test of time since the mid-1990s.

Eldkvarn took a break in 2015.

The band had a farewell tour during the summer of 2023.

It has now been announced that a new single is coming and an additional tour is under plans.
