Accomplished Irish character actor who has appeared in dozens of films, TV programmes, stage plays, and on voice-overs since 1970. He is largely known for his work on British TV, in particular 'The Burke Enigma' (1978), 'The Tudors' (2007-08), and more recently 'Vikings' (2013-14), but has also enjoyed international exposure through his film appearances.

He is married to the actress Anne Kavanagh, and is the father of Rachel Kavanagh.
