The Whitney Singers

Members: Marva Whitney, Bobbie Davis, Alma Whitney, Alvena Henderson, Billy Farrell (4), Melvin Moore (7), Robert Hawkins (2), Pat Howard (2), Sarah Fisher (2), Harry Whitney (2), Lois Sheppard

Long-running black gospel group from Kansas City started by Alma Whitney in the 1950s. They recorded a number of full length albums and 45s on various Kansas City and southern gospel labels over a fifty-year timeframe. Soul / funk singer Marva Whitney joined the group at age 16 and married Harry Whitney (2) two years later. She later joined Kansas City group The Derbys (3) before touring with the James Brown revue in the late 60s and returning back to Kansas City, where she appears on some later releases by The Whitney Singers.
