Dirkie Smit
Real name: Dirk Gerhardus Smit
Dirkie Smit was a popular and prolific 'Boereorkes' leader who could play several instruments but is mainly known for playing the concertina. He was born in Pretoria on 14 April 1933 - and died on 16 February 1987. He produced about 20 Boeremusiek albums in his life and also a few albums with other artists such as Basie Burger, Richard Vergottini, Glen Kieswetter, Klem Carstens, Johan van Vuuren and Jurie Ferreira. Also known as the composer of several popular Boeremusiek tunes. Among his achievements was winning the Boeremusiek competition organised by SABC TV in 1982.
