The Fylde Coast Jazzmen
Trad jazz band based originating from the North West of England.
Formed in 1960 under the name "Fylde Coast Stompers", line up comprised Ron Stephens (Trumpet), Dave Lee (Clarinet / Alto Sax), Alan Riley (Valve Trombone / Baritone Sax), Eric [Willy] Barrow (Banjo /Guitar), Duncan Reid (Bass) and Norman Wakefield (Drums). Forty years on and the only change in personnel is Doug Whaley, the fine trumpet player from Stockport.
In the 60's, their busy schedule included seasons at Blackpool's famous tower and Winter Gardens Ballrooms followed by three years at the Dixieland Bars Central Pier Blackpool, Morecambe and Southport. They appeared for Blackpool publicity Department at the 1985 Earls Court Travel Exhibition and on many occasions for the switch on of the illuminations in company with guests ranging from Terry Wogan and Dr. Who to Red Rum (the famous racehorse). 1966 saw the Jazzmen's T.V. debut when they were declared winners of ITV's "Opportunity Knocks", which led to further shows including the series "Star Town" and All Stars "It's A Knockout", alongside Stirling Moss, Bonny Langford, Acker Bilk and the late Billy Dainty.
They have done several Radio Broadcasts, the most auspicious was with their great friend Nat Gonella to celebrate his 70th birthday, now sadly missed. The exciting sound of the "Fylde Coast Jazzmen" is preserved on their record, "Running Wild" and a tape, "The Fylde Coast Jazzmen - The First 25years".
