Real name: Alexander Fritz Georg Kniestädt

Georg Kniestädt was born in Berlin in 1895. He learned to play the violin at the "Stern'sches Konservatorium". In 1912, aged 17, he became member oft the orchestra of the Berlin Court Opera (later Staatsoper) for over 30 years. From 1924 onwards he was the Konzertmeister (leader) of the 1st violins.
Georg Kniestädt had his own quartet (1932-1944) and was the leader of the "Kammermusik-Vereinigung der Staatsoper". As a member of several National Socialist organizations, he was no longer allowed to perform in public after the war. George Kniestädt died in his native town in 1948. He used the pseudonym Giorgio Amato.
