International Orchestra Safari Sound

Real name: International Orchestra Safari Sound (IOSS)

Members: Ndala Kasheba

The International Orchestra Safari Sound (IOSS) is a popular Tanzanian dansi music group.
Period of musical activity: 1985 - 1992

The International Sound Safari Orchestra was founded in the 1980s by businessman Hugo Kisima. Kisima was the owner of another famous dansi orchestra, the Orchestre Safari Sound; in 1985 he decided to dissolve the old formation and create a new group with musicians from other established orchestras, especially Milmani Park (who later became the rival IOSS formation par excellence). Singer Muhiddin Maalin Gurumo and guitarist Abel Balthazar were chosen as leaders of the new formation. The main composer and lead singer was Hassani Bitchuka.
In the 1980s IOSS and Milmani Park were the dominant orchestras of the dansi scene for several years. This period ended between 1987 and 1989 with the abandonment of Bitchuka and Maalim, followed by that of other members of the group. A last period of glory of the IOSS occurred in the early nineties, following the entry of the formation of guitarist Nguza Mbangu, a former member of the historic Maquis Original Orchestra. Despite this revival, the group owner decided to disband the orchestra in 1992.
