Margaret Keyes

American contralto vocalist, from Rochester, New York. She was the contralto soloist at the Broadway Tabernacle Church in New York from 1902 until her retirement in 1932.

Keyes received her early musical education in Florence, Italy. She also studied in the US under Herbert Witherspoon, and for German lieder, with George Henschel and Max Heinrich. From 1909 to 1917 she was the soloist for The Chicago Symphony Orchestra on its spring tour. She made her operatic debut with the Chicago Opera Company's production of Rigoletto in 1912, and sang with the company until 1914. She also made numerous appearances with the The Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski, and toured the US and Canada with Enrico Caruso in 1908.
