Sirgazhi Govindarajan was born Jan 19, 1933 at Sirgazhi of Tanjore district (later Thanjavur district) also denoted as Sirkali – in present day Tamil Nadu and died Mar 24, 1988. He was a leading vocalist in carnatic music and graduated at 17 with the degree 'Isaimani' in 1949. He widened his knowledge of the nuances of Indian music, especially classical carnatic music, and won many competitions. Govindarajan did also playback singing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films. In 1951 he was signed by K. S. Ayer as an exclusive HMV artist and also became a cine-artiste.
Also referred to as »Isaimani Padmashri Dr. Sirkali S. Govindarajan« including some of his titles. Sirgazhi also is written Sirgazih, Seerkhazi or Sirkazhi.
