Joaquín García

Joaquín García will tell you he writes pop music. To us, each verse has the feeling of a hundred long-lost folk songs, but the genre is not important. What matters is that it is brutally honest, it speaks in a real way, and within three minutes it has you hooked and wanting more. He has the ability to hide everyday insights and universal truth inside a catchy tune.

In 2012, we recorded his first EP, Over The Last Few Years, as a solo acoustic show live in a garden with a quiet audience of close friends. He then went on to write new songs and assemble a band to prepare for recording a full album and performing live shows. In a few months The Local Universe became lyrics, a song, an album and a band. On June 6th, 2013 they opened for Balmorhea at Lunario and have been continually growing inside the Mexico City indie scene ever since.

Joaquín’s debut album is a record that fully captures the spirit of our collective, label and attempt at becoming a generation. It features seven songs that sound like they could come from many times and places, but have a feeling that is completely of this moment and belongs to the city they were written in. Some of those songs were crafted when Joaquin was nineteen, and are sounding-proof that he has always been a step ahead. One that goes back to the origin and returns only with the most essential thing: Soul. Voice. Call it what you will, but it tells you exactly where he’s coming from.
