The choir was founded in 1947, and in 1991 it was named after Niko Sulkhanishvili (Николай Сулханишвили).
Since 2005 the Georgian State Choir has been united into the National Music Center and in 2015 it joined the Djansug Kakhidze Tbilisi Center for Music & Culture.
The current leader of the choir is Givi Munjishvili (Гиви Мунджишвили) and the chief conductor is Archil Ushveridze.
