Tony Mangra
Real name: Tony Mangra
Tony Mangra was born in Albouystown, Guyana but grew up in the village of Port Mourant. He also spent many years living with his grandparents at No 63 Village on the Courentyne River. He left Guyana in 1982, migrating to the USA and brought with him a lifelong dream of singing and recording music. He is a songwriter and plays the guitar. His songs range from love ballads to compositions about his roots. Because of his early influences, his music has a reggae influence.Guyana is located in South America but culturally it is a part of the West Indies. Tony grew up in the countryside of Guyana listening to music from India, rock steady (what has now evolved to what the world knows as reggae), calypso, and Guyanese folk music. Some of his influences are Bob Marley, The Tradewinds, The Merrymen, and The Mighty Sparrow to name a few.
He joined the US army in 1983 and served for close to 30 years. Military lifestyle has introduced him to a number of musicians from different parts of the country. This flavor is captured in his music while staying very close to his roots
