Formed in late 1996 by Deron Miller and Jess Margera after putting their prior group, Foreign Objects on hiatus to focus on making music with more potential for radio play. After going through a few other members playing bass and guitar, the group ultimately became a trio, adding bassist Ryan Bruni.
While recording demos at Groundhog Studios, the band met Chad Ginsburg who, after being impressed with their material, soon joined the group. A short time after adding Ginsburg, the band commenced recording a full length album, and changed their name to CKY
