Formed in 1984, The CJO pre-dates most of the other repertory big bands around the country. In its annual subscription series of concerts, the orchestra has performed the important jazz works of Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton and is the only other orchestra that has performed the complex arrangements of the Sauter-Finegan orchestra.
