Professional choir based at Winchester Cathedral, in Hampshire. It comprises 22 boy choristers (aged 8-13) and 12 permanent adult male singers (lay clerks), who sing eight services a week.
The Cathedral also runs a girls’ choir (founded in 1999 and composed of 20 girls aged 12-17), a chamber choir (consisting of 25-30 singers of all ages and complementing the main choirs outside choir term time) and a nave choir (formed in 2007 and made up of around 40 singers drawn from the Cathedral congregation, who sing at services that fall outside those covered by the main choirs).
Since 2002, the Director of Music is Andrew Lumsden, assisted by George Castle since September 2012. Former directors include Samuel Sebastian Wesley (October 1849-1865), (1949-1972), Martin Neary (1972-1988) and David Hill (1988-2002).
