Terry joined Sweeney's Men, the first Irish folk-rock band, in 1967. The group split in 1969. Joined by the folk duo Tim Hart and Maddy Prior and Terry's wife Gay they became Steeleye Span. The group released Hark! The Village Wait in 1970, after which Gay & Terry left the band, who continued without them. Gay & Terry then formed The Woods Band in 1970/71, continuing as Gay & Terry Woods after that band folded. After the couple split in 1980, Terry mostly retired from the music industry until he joined The Pogues in 1986. Leaving The Pogues in 1993, he went on to form the short-lived band The Bucks (2) with Ron Kavana.

By the early 2000s, Terry had moved into management and also led a new group under the name The Woods Band. He re-joined The Pogues when they reunited in 2001, performing with them until their final performances in 2014.
