The Akrabolts: De Schriebl & Huppertzen from California.
Karl Schriebl was unique. The miner coming from the east, who settled in Kerkrade (Netherlands), soon exchanged his mine lamp for the accordion. Thanks to his "Schneewalzer" he got a name and with Jos Huppertz he traveled through the south of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The oriental gypsy-like influences on his accordion playing are never given in our regions. Johnny Hoes was pleasantly surprised these days when he thought he discovered a number of unknown Schriebl songs. He became even happier when he found out that it was not about titles of the late Karl Schriebl, but about another, vibrant group: The Akrabolts from California. The group consists of Slovenes, who at the time went to California as guest workers to work in the mines there. They also took their accordions with them. Nowadays they still make music there for their fellow countrymen, but that music will soon be known throughout Europe.
The word "akrabolt" is Slovenian and difficult to translate in Dutch. The best description simply gives the music of the group. The musician team is led by Joe Mlakar Sr., who was born in the Lotz Valley in Slovenia, part of Yugoslavia. Since 1959 he has lived in Fontana, California, where he runs a polka-dance café. There he started with his orchestra every Friday and Saturday evening. Joe Jr. plays banjo, Chris Mielke handles the drum sticks and Ed Kiefer plays electric bass guitar.
The Akrabolts reportoire consists partly of Slovenian traditionals, supplemented with songs by Joe Mlakar. Good songs from others also are likely to be included in the repertoire and they even edit chart songs on stage.
A proposal by Johnny Hoes to record Karl Schriebl's old Schneewaltzer, especially for the American market, has been gratefully accepted.

Karl Schriebl was uniek. De uit het oosten komende mijnwerker, die zich in Kerkrade (Nederland) vestigde, ruilde al snel zijn mijnlamp voor de akkordeon. Dankzij zijn "Schneewalzer" kreeg hij naam en met Jos Huppertz trok hij door zuid-Nederland, België en Duitsland. De oosterse zigeuner-achtige invloeden op zijn akkordeonspel zijn in onze regio's nooit gevenaard. Blij verrast was Johnny Hoes dezer dagen toen hij meende een aantal onbekende Schriebl-nummers te ontdekken. Nog blijer wwrd hij toen hij erachter kwam dat het niet om titels van de overleden Karl Schriebl ging maar om een andere, springlevende groep: The Akrabolts uit Californië. De groep bestaat uit Slovenen, die destijds als gastarbeiders naar Californië trokken om daar in de mijnen te werken. Ook zij namen hun accordeons mee. Nu nog maen ze daar muziek voor hun streekgenoten, maar die muziek zal snel in heel Europa bekend zijn.
Het woord "akrabolt" is Sloveens en moeilijk in het Nedrlands te vetalen. De beste omschrijving geeft gewoon het plaatwerk van de groep. Het muziekantenteam staat onder leiding van Joe Mlakar Sr., die werd geboren in de Lotz-vallei in Slovenia, een deel van Joegoslavië. Sinds 1959 woont hij in de Californische plaats Fontana, waar hij een polkadanscafé uitbaat. Daar begon hij met zijn orkest, elke vrijdag- en zaterdagavond. Joe Jr. speelt banjo, Chris Mielke hanteert de drumstokken en Ed Kiefer speelt electrische basgitaar.
Het reportoire van The Akrabolts bestaat voor een deel uit Sloveense traditionals, aangevuld met nummers van Joe Mlakar. Ook goede nummers van anderen worden graag in het repertoire opgenomen en zelfs bewerkt men op het podium wel hitparadenummers.
Een voorstel van Johnny Hoes om, speciaal voor de Amerikaanse markt, de aloude Schneewaltzer van Karl Schriebl op de plaat te zetten is in dank aanvaard.
