He won the 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature.
In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002 to identify the "100 Greatest Britons", participants voted Churchill to be history's "greatest" Briton.
Churchill's legal surname was Spencer-Churchill, but starting with his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, his branch of the family always used just the name Churchill in public life.
