Biography

The Smart Tones
Effective period / Period of releases: 1958
The New Brunswick NJ group began as a foursome, which had been singing together informally since schooldays and was managed by Max Harrison of Metuchen NJ. The group was composed of George Gregory, Leroy Pittman, Robert Pruitt, and William Terrell. In early 1958, the Group was joined by 16-year-old John Murray Jr. of Rahway, NJ. Max Harrison and Frank J. Wolf composed the "Ginny" and "Bob O Link" songs. The new quintet, who performed as the Smart-Tones, recorded the two songs which were released by Herald in September 1958. The Smart Tones were probably named after the publisher, Smart Music Corp., which handled all Copyrights for Harrison & Wolf.
