French prince, soldier, statesman and amateur composer. Born 2 August 1674 at Saint-Cloud; died 2 December 1723 at Versailles. He was the grandson of Louis XIII and son of Louis XIV's younger brother Philippe d'Orléans and served as regent of France between 1715 and 1723.
