She was married to songwriter Ray Gilbert from 1962 until his death in 1976. Stepmother of actress Joanne Gilbert. Once married, her name became Janis Paige Gilbert.

She was singing in public from age 5 in local amateur shows. She moved to Los Angeles after graduating from high school and earned a job as a singer at the Hollywood Canteen during the war years.
She inherited and had managed her husband's music publishing since 1976: Ipanema Music, Ipanema Music Co., Ipanema Music Corp. and Ipanema Music Ltd.
Her most recent public appearance was in 2012, giving a cabaret performance at Vitello’s in Los Angeles at the age of 90.
